This is a small, black crow with a distinctive silvery sheen to the back of its head. The pale eyes are also noticeable. The jackdaw call is a familiar hard 'tchack' from which it gets its name. It will commonly nest in chimneys, buildings, rock crevices and tree holes.
Insects, young birds and eggs, fruit, seeds and scraps.
Jackdaws can be found in fields, woods, parks and gardens. They're social birds and roost communally in woodlands. They're widespread and common across the UK, except the Scottish Highlands.
You can see jackdaws at any time of year. They often join up with rooks and carrion crows in autumn and winter to roost together in huge numbers.
