This Experience Nature activity can be completed as part of Schools Wild Challenge.

Encourage pupils to look for signs of the seasons and provide opportunities for them to observe animal behaviour.

Season: All year

Instructions

Plan a route around your school grounds that will enable pupils to search for points of interest or seasonal relevance as they explore. You may also want to provide opportunities for them to be still and quiet in specific areas where they are likely to be able to observe animals.

Signs of the seasons

Provide your pupils with the appropriate seasonal ‘Spot it’ sheet and ask them to look for the features listed as part of their walk and/or as they explore a designated area.

Discuss what behaviour might be necessary to allow them to observe certain things (for example they need to be quiet to hear birdsong). You could ask them to look at different plants and consider how they might look in a different season (for example, if they might have leaves/lose their leaves or have died back).
