Wings and Words Art Competition

Create an artwork inspired by nature that incorporates words about birds or nature as part of the image. Inspiration can come from anywhere!  

Do you have a favourite nature word, like lush or dappled or murmuration? 

Do you love the scientific names of birds like Cuculus canorus (Cuckoo) or Crex crex (Corncrake)? Ever try to make words from their calls, like the Tawny Owl’s ‘Twit-twoo’ or the Great Tit’s ‘teacher teacher’? 

Do you keep a diary, or a nature journal, or ever feel moved to try your hand at poetry? 

Send us an image of birds or nature that uses some of these words as part of the image. They can be incorporated however you like – the only limit is your imagination!* 

All art forms are welcome: paintings, photographs, collages – we want to see what nature means to you, so let your imagination run wild!  

*Please do not use copyrighted works in your image 

Email a high quality image of your artwork to campaigns@rspb.org.uk with the subject line ‘wings and words competition’, and tell us your name and age. Please retain your original artwork once you have emailed your image, as if you are shortlisted we may contact you to request the original, or a higher resolution image

Winning artworks will travel with us to Westminster to inspire politicians and RSPB supporters to work together for nature, and will be featured in Wingbeat magazine. The winner will also receive an RSPB prize bundle and a copy of The Book of Birds by Jackie Morris and Robert Macfarlane.
